4 Car Rental Tips for Family Vacations

family vacationWhen planning a family vacation, one of the most important things to consider is renting a car. However, we usually think about it a few seconds before departing for a trip. We have asked experts from Toronto car service to give us several tips on renting a car for a family holiday.

#1 Comparison Tools are Useful

When you’re shopping for a new vehicle, you find out that every dealer is different. Car rental services are similar. So, instead of waiting until you arrive at the airport, check out prices and packages online to get the best deal for your vacation car rental.

#2 Avoid Hidden Fees

If you don’t want to end up paying a lot more than you’ve calculated, make sure you’ve read the contract right. It’s the only way to avoid hidden fees! Most car rental services will charge extra for refueling if a client returns the vehicle with less gas than when he/she got it. We’re suggesting making a note of the gas gauge when you pick up the car and returning it with (at least) the same amount. If you’re under 25 years old and a parent, car rental companies might charge an extra fee a day because of your age.

#3 Renting Abroad Might Be Different Than You Think

Even though renting a car abroad is quite similar to renting car in your own country, it still isn’t the same. Some rental companies will require IDP (international driving permit). For example, if you’re from US, you won’t need IDP in most English-speaking countries. Nevertheless, you should check it before getting to your destination airport. In most European countries, compact cars are the norm, while renting a van usually costs more. In Caribbean, a client pays a premium for larger vehicles, too.

#4 Insurance Issue

Before renting a car abroad, check whether your insurance company covers you for foreign rentals. If the answer is no, you should purchase insurance offered by the rental company.
