2015 Ford Mustang – New Airbag System
Ford Motor Company is trying a lot of crazy and fun stuff with the 2015 Mustang. By far, they have announced turbo fours, European sales, independent rear suspensions. Safety measures are not excluded, though. With the passenger-side airbag Ford is trying something completely new and promising!
The redesigned 2015 Mustang will feature a new knee-airbag system. Inflatable plastic bladder will be integrated into the glove box door, in between the outer and inner door panels. In case of detecting an accident, this bladder will inflate and extend the entire outer door toward passengers’ legs in order to provide cushioning. Will it occupy too much space? According to Ford manager Sean West, the new system is 75% smaller and 65% lighter compared to traditional knee-airbag designs, while passenger protection hasn’t been compromised. In addition, the technology that will make its debut in 2015 Mustang eliminates the need for a dedicated or seam airbag cover, which will obviously allow designers to create a roomier cabin by moving dashboard closer to the windshield.
Nevertheless, the new Mustang offers even more, at least when it comes to safety precautions. This model features eight airbags (twice more than the current model) and additional crash sensors. Both the convertible and fastback include passenger and driver seat-mounted and front side airbags, together with a driver knee airbag, although convertible features seat-mounted head airbag on each side as well. There is also new anchor-side seat-belt pretension, which will keep occupants more securely positioned in the event of an accidents.
Although National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not crash-tested the 2015 Mustang yet, it has commented that injuries to the knee-thigh-hip complex are very often, debilitating and costly consequences of car crashes. Well, it seems that Ford Motor Company has been trying to prevent us from expensive injuries, although it remains to be seen whether they have succeeded or not.
Anyway, this car manufacturer surely shakes up the competition with this new safety feature. We expect it to be seen this technology in other Ford vehicles eventually.
